Boxing team tightens up for Rio

first_imgAnxiety is building as the event approaches, inspiring the young athletes to unload punching power in training sessions.Our boxers, all in their early 20’s are Thadius Katua 60kg, Charlie Keama 52kg, Andrew Aisaga 69kg and Jonathan Keama 69kg.They are also preparing for the AIBA Asia and Oceanic Continental Olympic Qualifying Comp in Qian’an in China later this month to determine their places in the Rio Olympics.For the lightweight division, Commonwealth Gold medalist, Thadius Katua (60kg) category will step into the ring with another big opportunity for his career.In the Flyweight division, silver medalist of the 2012 Canberra Olympic Qualifying tournament Charlie Keama 52kg, is also looking forward to feature in Rio.In the welter weight division, 2012 PNG Games Gold medalist Andrew Aisaga (69kg) is eyeing a spot while in the middle weight, Jonathan Keama 75kg wants the same.“They may look young but they are very humble and obedient when it comes to training and participating in,” Team PNG boxing Coach Joe Aufa said.Aufa also said they have been training hard with the facilities they have and the discipline that the boys are showing will definitely find them a place for the Olympics.They travel to China on March 23.last_img
