Five Cancun properties seized from exVeracruz governor Duarte

first_imgCancun, Q.R. — Federal authorities have seized another eight properties belonging to the detained ex-governor of Veracruz, Javier Duarte. Five of them were located in the city of Cancun.The Attorney General’s Office of Veracruz says they have secured an additional eight properties belonging to the former governor of Veracruz, Javier Duarte. Five of them are reported to be luxury apartments in Cancun and three in Bosques de Santa Fe.The attorney general says these latest eight are added to the 21 plots of land and 20 other apartments, buildings, condominiums and ranches that federal authorities have already seized from Durate.The apartments in Santa Fe were bought by José Juan Janeiro Rodríguez, the alleged financial brain of the former governor during 2012 and 2013, with a cost of 38.1 million peso. Officials say Durate purchased his properties by prestanombres, a prodess where one person asks another, for a specified amount of time, to act as owner of their property.Historically, prestanombres have been used to hide acts of corruption such as money laundering and tax fraud.Duarte was arrested in a small colonial town in Guatemala in October of 2017.
