Drug makers recall cold meds for kids

first_imgHowever, industry critics challenged this statement. “When it comes to children under age two there are no recommended doses on these products so it’s not reasonable to claim they are safe and effective when used as directed,” said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, Baltimore’s health commissioner. Because weight is a major factor in determining dosage, the wide variances among babies and toddlers can cause problems in determining the proper amount of medication to give, said Dr. Christopher Tolcher, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “Over the years, children have died due to overuse and multiple combinations of these cough and cold meds,” said Tolcher, a pediatrician at Encino-Tarzana Hospital. The FDA is reviewing the safety of cold medicines at the request Sharfstein and other Baltimore city officials, who reported 900 Maryland children under four overdosed on the products in 2004. Shares of Johnson and Johnson rose 22 cents to $66.05 while shares of Wyeth fell 12 cents to $46.03. Shares of Novartis AG dipped one cent to $54.22 and Prestige Brands Holdings Inc. fell 6 cents to $11.10.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Current labeling directs parents to consult a doctor before administering the drugs to infants and toddlers. Government scientists also said there is little evidence that cold medicines actually work in younger children. FDA will formally consider revising labeling at a meeting scheduled for Oct. 18-19. After reviewing reports of side effects over the last four decades, FDA found 54 child fatalities from over-the-counter decongestant medicines. The agency found 69 reports of children’s deaths connected with antihistamines, which are used to treat runny noses. The Consumer Healthcare Products Association, which represents drug makers, said it will conduct a multiyear campaign to educate parents and physicians on safe use of cold medicines. The trade group stressed in a statement that the “medicines are, and have always been, safe at recommended doses.” Drug makers today voluntarily pulled kids’ cold medicines off the market less than two weeks after the government warned of potential health risks to infants. Products aimed at children under the age of 2 are being removed from store shelves due to “rare instantances of misuse” that could lead to accidental overdose, a trade group that represents over-the-counter drug makers said. Cold medicines being withdrawn include: Johnson & Johnson Pediacare Infant Drops and Tylenol Concentrated Infants Drops, Wyeth’s Dimetapp Decongestant Infant Drops, Novartis’ Triaminic Infant & Toddler Thin Strips and Prestige Brands Holdings’ Little Colds Decongestant Plus Cough. CVS Caremark Corp. said today it would remove the affected products as well as CVS-brand equivalents from store shelves. last_img read more

‘He shouldn’t be working in football’ – Man United fans blast Alderweireld decision

first_img gameday huge blow Ed Woodward, a man who built his reputation as far away from football as you can ever imagine, actually told a football manager, a successful one at that, that spending 50m+ on Alderweireld, who was exceptional tonight, or Maguire wouldn’t be a wise football investment. Christ— Yomi Borokini ™️ (@_BOROKINI) August 27, 2018 Jose Mourinho must be crying inside watching Alderweireld tonight. He has been a monster for Spurs at the back. Meanwhile he has to watch Matic, Herrera, Smalling, Jones and Lindelof play at the back for him.— 360Sources (@360Sources) August 27, 2018 After the break it was a different story, with Harry Kane heading past David de Gea and Lucas Moura grabbing a brace to continue Tottenham’s 100 per cent start to the season and make it two losses in the opening three games for United. For the second game in a row, it was United’s defence that came under fire. The truth is, Mourinho knew he desperately needed a centre back in pre season and Woodward turned his back on him. Defensive mistakes against Brighton and Tottenham could’ve been avoided with Alderweireld (who has been exceptional) or Maguire there. Woodward’s face makes me sick.— The Man Utd Way (@TheManUtdWay) August 27, 2018 no dice If only we had a cb like alderweireld aye Woodward?— Stephen Kavanagh (@bigbeard88) August 27, 2018 Tottenham v Brighton LIVE: talkSPORT commentary and team news for Boxing Day opener Glad Woodward is our director of football. Great decision not to sign Alderweireld and keep Smalling and Jones.— Luke Ash (@smishking) August 27, 2018 Every current Premier League club’s best kit from the past decade possible standings That Toby Alderweireld looks good. Maybe Manchester United shouldn’t have squabbled about the price and actually have signed him.— Liam Canning (@LiamPaulCanning) August 27, 2018 Premier League Team of the Season so far, including Liverpool and Leicester stars Remember though we didn’t want Alderweireld, far too old. England’s most successful clubs of the past decade, according to trophies won Son ban confirmed as Tottenham fail with appeal to overturn red card Quick reminder that Ed Woodward called Toby Alderweireld “Spurs 5th choice centre back” in his brief to media as an excuse to not spend money.— Mike (@MikeLUHG) August 27, 2018 Where Ancelotti ranks with every Premier League boss for trophies won center_img If Woodward didn’t think Alderweireld was an upgrade on Jones or Smalling then he really shouldn’t be working in the football industry! #hadone #MUNvsTOT— Chris Johnston (@chrisjohns10) August 27, 2018 And it is Woodward who has been the subject of criticism from United fans, following the Belgium ace’s showing at Old Trafford. You can see some of the best reaction below… shining Like in last week’s defeat to Brighton, Jose Mourinho’s backline was woefully poor – despite his decision to drop both centre-backs that started the Brighton game and select a back-three featuring midfielder Ander Herrera. The back-three turned out to be a calamity, with Herrera, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all failing to deal with Tottenham’s attacking unit time and time again.Mourinho had to watch on as Alderweireld showed what a top class centre-back really looks like, having tried to sign the Spurs star over the summer. He was denied this wish by Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-chairman, who deemed Alderweireld unsuitable. silverware 2 REVEALED Oxlade-Chamberlain suffers another setback as Klopp confirms serious injury Look at this performance from Alderweireld, the kind of leadership our team needs at the back. £55m for a man who would have transformed our whole backline and we turned it down.— JoshGI (@JoshGI97) August 27, 2018 Toby Alderweireld gave Manchester United a taste of what they missed out on with a stunning performance in Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat of the Red Devils.Alderweireld, the Belgium international, was superb at the heart of Spurs’ defence against a United side who, in the first half at least, did cause the Lilywhites some problems. ALTERED How the Premier League table could change after the Boxing Day fixtures Just remember Ed Woodward didn’t want to sign Toby Alderweireld because he didn’t think he was better than any of the defenders we have already. #mufc— Simply Utd (@SimplyUtd) August 27, 2018 Latest Premier League news smart causal Tottenham predicted XI to face Brighton with Mourinho expected to make big changes Alderweireld has now started both of Spurs’ last two matches after looking set to leave north London over the summer REVEALED 2last_img read more
