Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers reported a busy Thanksgiving night along Interstate 5 in the Woodburn area as they worked with ODOT to handle expected heavy traffic for the annual Woodburn Outlet Mall “Moonlight Madness” sale.According to OSP Sergeant Bob Charpentier, the anticipated heavy backed up traffic and congestion happened as travelers and shoppers converged in both directions on Interstate 5 at exit 271 (Woodburn). OSP troopers concentrated patrol and enforcement efforts on a four mile stretch near the interchange. Fifty-one (51) citations were issued to motorists during a six hour period for violations including illegal stopping / standing on the highway, failure to obey traffic control device, failure to use safety restraints, driving while suspended, and driving uninsured.One person was arrested for DUII and three others cited for Unlawful Possession of less than an Ounce of Marijuana. Traffic was still backed up for several miles in the far right lane to exit into Woodburn at 2:00 a.m.Travelers going to or through that area Friday may see some congestion near Woodburn as well as southbound toward Eugene as thousands of football fans go to Eugene for the 4:00 p.m. University of Oregon football game.OSP and ODOT urge all drivers to stay alert and focused on their driving. Keep a safe following distance at a safe speed for road and traffic conditions.
