first_imgCounty councillor John O’Donnell has slammed the local school transport system saying it is letting the children of Donegal and their parents down.Independent John O’DonnellThe Independent councillor says that living in rural Donegal should not disenfranchise students and parents from choosing where they wish to receive their education.“At present a child must choose the school which is closest to their home if they are to avail of the eligible transport ticket. If outside the jurisdictions a concessionary ticket is only available at a cost of €350,” he said. However, Councillor O’Donnell questions how the distance is being calculated.“It has been brought to my attention that several cases this summer have been calculated using what I would term as non-conforming main roads, to ascertain which school is closest to student.”Councillor O’Donnell is clear on his view, he says.“A family on a medical card struggling to survive are being asked to pay for transport because they are not within the boundaries of the school they would prefer to go to, and further more after paying this absorbent cost the child is still not guaranteed a seat on the bus as a concessionary ticket does not guarantee you a seat, as eligible tickets holders are given first preference. He added that some families who were slower to register their intent to use the bus service who have been advised that the transport is full to capacity and they have to make their own transport arrangements.Putting Children through education is hard for all families without this added stress and financial burden and with no guarantees given that the child will get the transport required, added Cllr O’Donnell.“Our children are our future; it is our obligation to give them the best education we can. All I ask is for the government, department of education and the Bus Eireann to come together to review the current costing and ruling and make it better for all our students in rural Donegal,” he said.CLLR O’DONNELL SLAMS STUDENT TRANSPORT RULING was last modified: September 30th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Cllr John O’Donnelldonegalschool rasperlast_img read more
