A drenching Pacific storm Tuesday turned streets into flooded channels, made driving the freeways an exercise in survival, and contributed to a roll-over collision in Norwalk, authorities said. National Weather Service spokeswoman Bonnie Bartling said showers were expected to continue through this morning, followed by partly cloudy skies this afternoon. The area will start drying out on Thursday. On Tuesday, a 42-year-old Norwalk woman escaped injuries after her 2000 Dodge Durango veered off the Shoemaker Avenue bridge near the Golden State (5) Freeway and overturned. The vehicle landed near the backyard of a home on Loch Nevis Avenue, county sheriff’s officials said. The woman was the sole person in the vehicle. “She said she made the turn and lost control of the vehicle and tried to correct it, and she overcorrected it,” Deputy Phil Fernandez said. Flooding occurred in an area just before the Shoemaker bridge, contributing to the collision, officials said. Tuesday’s storm also brought off-and-on heavy rain, more than 2 feet of snow in local mountains, winds and a flash-flood advisory issued by the NWS. Coastal and valley areas got from 1 to 2 inches of rain, while the mountains got up to 4 inches of rain, the weather service said. Because of the subtropical nature of the storm, snow levels remained fairly high, around the 6,000-foot level. Higher elevations received up to 27 inches of new snow, NWS officials said. High winds blew in the mountain areas, gusting up to 50 mph in some areas, forecasters said. A winter storm warning remained in effect until 6 a.m. today. And we’re not out of the rainy woods yet. A weaker storm system being tracked Tuesday was expected to move into the Los Angeles area Friday and Saturday, Bartling said. – From staff and wire reportslast_img read more
