Hobart’s Southern Touch affiliate is experiencing a surge of popularity as Touch Football spreads like wildfire in Australia’s island state. In the past two years Southern Touch has added an extra 18 senior teams and 14 junior teams, a new field at the Wentworth Park sporting complex and a new Premier League competition. 163 senior and 98 junior teams will use nine fields for the 2007/08 Summer Season, which commences this week. Wentworth Park has been Southern Touch’s home for the past decade but with competition currently running at capacity five days a week administrators are considering contingency plans to deal with the numbers. General Manager Phil Mascall said a new venue at the Showground was one option being considered to allow the affiliate to reach its full potential. “The Showground had racing there, but the racing has all finished up now and where the race track was they’ve actually been able to expand their field size,” he said. Mascall said the Southern Touch committee was anticipating it would reach an agreement with the Showground for next summer’s competition. An additional venue would take pressure off the junior competition. “With two venues we’d run a number of schools over at that venue and a number of schools at Wentworth Park and we could basically just about double what we’re taking now. As far as next season goes it will allow a massive, substantial amount of growth,” Mascall said. The Mixed competition is the most popular category at Southern Touch. There are currently 65 mixed teams with 64 men’s and 34 women’s sides doing battle. Southern Touch has a strong association with business and corporate teams who value the Mixed Touch competition as an opportunity for colleagues to interact and have fun in a social environment. The affiliate is also making changes which allows for a greater division between the social and the elite teams that are part of Southern Touch. The formation of the new SportsCo Eastlands Premier League will boost top-level competition while the traditional Boags Southern League will remain for social teams. The new competition structure was introduced to push for more elite competition without interfering in current social tournaments. “It’s been a structural plan that the Association has had in the woodwork for a number of years. It was always anticipated since maybe two years ago to develop the competition and split it to break away the elite side of things from the social side of it. Due to staff and committee changes over the past couple of years it never got implemented but this year everything has been rolling along pretty well. We’ve got a firm committee and obviously the staff supported it so it was a good year to do it,” Mascall said. There will be four teams in the Men’s and four in the Women’s divisions in the new Premier League, which taps off for the first time this Friday night. It is hoped that numbers will expand in coming years to include eight self-supporting clubs that will field Premier League teams in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed, first and second division. Recent newspaper coverage will undoubtedly further add to the popularity of the sport in Hobart. As well as featuring a double-page season preview, local paper ‘The Mercury’ will run a weekly report on the Premier League and keep Tasmanians up to date with the latest news in Touch. Touch Football Australia would like to wish all the best to everyone involved with the busy season ahead at Southern Touch and congratulate them on their success thus far.

At 30 years old, Ohio State’s second-year head lacrosse coach Nick Myers is living his dream.“I still pinch myself occasionally driving in each morning knowing that I am the head coach at Ohio State,” Myers said. “It’s very special to me.”On July 10, 2008, Myers became the 13th head coach of the OSU lacrosse program. He spent the previous three seasons as the Buckeyes’ top assistant. It was during those three years and two other seasons as a volunteer assistant under former coach Joe Breschi when Myers grew and learned how to coach.“Watching Nick develop from a young 24-year-old volunteer assistant into the head coach is great to see,” said Breschi, who is currently the coach at the University of North Carolina. In between his two assistant coaching jobs at OSU, Myers spent two seasons as the top assistant coach at Butler University. In his first year, Myers lead OSU to a 7-7 regular season record and the team advanced to the championship game in the Great Western Lacrosse League tournament. This year the team has a 6-6 record overall and is 2-3 in its new conference, the Eastern College Athletic Conference. When the team’s three senior captains Scott Foreman, Brandon Freeman and Andrew Stimmel talked about their coach, the one word they all used to describe him was “passionate.”Freeman said that Myers always brings high energy and passion to games and practices. Stimmel said that Myers pushes the players both on and off the field.“Nick has tremendous attention to detail, energy and passion for the game of lacrosse,” said Pat Myers, Nick’s brother and assistant coach at the University of North Carolina.Nick Myers’ stepfather introduced him to lacrosse, and Nick said he got his first look at a lacrosse stick as an eighth-grader.“For me it was a passion that I developed quickly,” Myers said. “It’s a game that is unique in a sense where it combines so many aspects of not only athleticism, but speed and scoring.”In high school, Myers was a two-time All-American and represented his home state of Maine in the 1997 North-South All-Star game.Myers was also a Division III All-American playing for Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he earned a degree in sports studies and physical education. After college, Myers came to OSU to be a volunteer assistant coach.“I knew financially it would be a burden,” Myers said. “I worked a couple of different jobs but it was so valuable, the time with coach Breschi, this staff and this family.”In Columbus, Nick joined his brother Pat who was playing lacrosse for the Buckeyes.“The chance to be with my brother for two years was really fun, too,” Nick Myers said. “We had a lot of fun together. I enjoyed coaching him.”In addition to on-the-field performance, Myers has the team set goals off the field as well.“At the beginning of the year we talk about family, academics and lacrosse,” Myers said. “We give a player handbook similar to what coach [Jim] Tressel has done with his ‘Winner’s Manual.’”This year, the team has achieved academic goals with a team grade point average of over 3.0. It also had 26 scholar athletes last quarter. The team also has contributed more than 600 hours of community service, beating its preseason goal of 500 hours.“Nick recognizes that playing lacrosse for Ohio State is a special honor, and is a privilege not a right,” Pat Myers said. “Lacrosse is secondary to the OSU lacrosse family and the academic aspect of the OSU lacrosse program.”Nick Myers has found a home in Columbus and at OSU. His face lit up as he said that he and his wife are expecting their first child this month.“I really feel like in a lot of ways this is where I have grown up. It is a place where I am very connected to through my family,” Myers said. “This athletic department is the finest in the country and it is very humbling at a young age to just be a part of it.”

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte, confessed that the Citizens are still hurt from last season’s Manchester Derby upset at Etihad Stadium.Manchester City really did have a unique opportunity that they wanted last season at the Derby that was played at Etihad Stadium and witnessed by Aymeric Laporte from the bench.Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United managed to upset the Citizens during the second half of the match with an unforgettable turnaround.Pep Guardiola’s players saw how their chances of winning the title in their own stadium vs their most hated rival wouldn’t be possible and this left some of the players quite scarred, this season is going to be very interesting for the next time that both clubs meet. The first Derby of the season will be next Sunday at Etihad Stadium once again, the Citizens get to this match as the Premier League’s top squad and the Red Devils appear to have completely recovered from the terrible start of the season that they had under Jose Mourinho. One of the players who is having an incredible start for Manchester City is Aymeric Laporte, the Athletic Bilbao product who got the call from Pep Guardiola on January and he arrived like the emergency transfer in order to aid the club’s sensible absences. At the start of his period for the Citizens, it was obvious that Laporte would take some time to adjust and his real level of performance wouldn’t be discovered until now.Aymeric Laporte on the Manchester derby:”It’s a very important match for two reasons… because it’s the Manchester derby and also because if we win we will put distance between ourselves and them in the table.” [Sky] pic.twitter.com/RNrRx32Hbe— City Watch (@City_Watch) November 8, 2018With a brand new season and a proper preparation to become one of Manchester City’s top players, Laporte has steadily transformed into one of Europe’s most impressive centre-backs and today has become a total lifesaver for his teammates with the Citizens.Manchester City has improved vastly on the defensive aspect because of what Laporte has managed to accomplish so far this season, they have become the best defensive side in English football with only four goals allowed in the first 11 matches.Throughout last season, this squad was already the one with the highest number of scored goals but they still lacked the defensive prowess that they possess today and Laporte has been the defensive leader the club needed. The last time Manchester United played at Etihad Stadium, the Basque defender wasn’t able to play the game because he still hadn’t reached the level of performance that Pep Guardiola expected from him.Daniel Farke, From mid-table in the Championship to the Premier League Manuel R. Twenty unbeaten matches is a nice record for me,” Laporte added.“I wasn’t aware until someone told me but obviously it’s exciting for me. Breaking records is always nice. Last season as a team we reached 100 points – that was very nice and this year I have this personal record.”“I hope we don’t lose on Sunday or not this derby or the following derby.
